Your coffee maker is used daily, but it’s likely one of the things you have that doesn’t get cleaned often. It’s important to clean your coffee maker, not only for the functioning of your machine but also for the taste of your morning brew.

Buildup of coffee in the coffee maker can make your cup taste bitter, and worse, there could be yeast and mold hiding in the reservoir, according to this 2011 study from the National Science Foundation. And while yeast and mold on a small scale usually won’t affect your health, they can cause an allergic reaction in some people.
To ensure your cup of coffee doesn’t contain any hidden surprises, clean your machine regularly. Carolyn Forte, director at Good Housekeeping, says a little water, soap, and vinegar is all you need for a good clean!
And if you’re wondering how to sanitize a coffee machine, we’re here to help.
How to clean a coffee maker
1 – Wash removable parts with detergent after each use.
“This is important because it helps remove leftover coffee, grounds, and oils,” says Forte. “You can wash by hand in the sink with warm, soapy water, but usually, the parts are dishwasher-safe. And don’t forget to clean the outside and the warming plate, where spills can burn.” She also recommends leaving the reservoir lid open to air dry completely after each use!
2 – Descale your machine every month with vinegar.
Over time, minerals from the water can build up and harden inside the machine, and you may notice that the coffee takes longer to drip. To get your coffee maker back to its perfect functioning, you need to clean and descale the machine. The expert trick from Forte is the tried and true white vinegar.
Fill the reservoir with equal parts vinegar and water and place a paper filter in the machine’s filter basket. Position the carafe in place and run the solution halfway through. Turn off the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, turn the coffee maker back on, finish the brewing, and pour out the full carafe of vinegar and water. Rinse everything by running a new paper filter and brewing a full carafe of clean water. Repeat once.
3 – Make your carafe shine again with rice.
You should always wash the carafe after each use, but if it becomes stained over time, fill it with warm soapy water and a little rice. Swirl the mixture to loosen any gunk. Use a sponge to remove the residue and rinse well.
